High-pressure boilers operate at pressures from 15 psi up to several hundred psi, serving industrial processes such as sterilization, chemical production, and power generation. The boiler must be designed and built to safely contain its rated pressure, with regular inspections required by code.
The material construction of a steam boiler affects its lifespan and safety. Boilers are typically made from carbon steel or stainless steel, with welded seams that must withstand thermal expansion and contraction. The water side of the boiler is subject to corrosion from dissolved oxygen and minerals in the feedwater. Proper water treatment, including deaeration and chemical conditioning, extends boiler life by preventing scale buildup and corrosion. A well-maintained steel steam boiler can operate for 25 years or more.
The control system on a modern steam boiler automates operation. Sensors monitor water level, steam pressure, flue gas temperature, and flame presence. The control system starts and stops the burner, opens and closes feedwater valves, and sounds alarms if conditions go outside safe limits. Some boilers include remote monitoring, allowing maintenance staff to check operation from a computer or phone. Automatic blowdown systems periodically remove concentrated minerals from the boiler water, maintaining water quality without manual intervention.
The safety features of a steam boiler are extensive. A safety valve releases pressure if the boiler exceeds its big allowable working pressure, preventing catastrophic failure. A low-water cutoff shuts down the burner if the water level drops below safe limits, as a boiler without water can overheat and rupture. Flame scanners verify that the burner ignites properly and shuts off fuel if the flame goes out.

It converts fuel into usable energy efficiently, operates automatically, and provides years of service with proper maintenance.
